WINTER, Elaine Keturah
8 juillet 2023

March 16, 1938-July 8,2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Elaine Keturah Winter on July 8th, 2023. Aged 85, loving mother of Jonathan Everett , grandmother of Danae Keturah, sister of the late Joseph and James Redmond, Janet, Gwendolyn and Jerome (Christiana) Redmond. She will be greatly missed by her nieces Melissa, Yolande, and Tashana, her nephews Trumel, Dwight, Aaron and Adrian, her great nieces Maria, Jael, Bernice and Jemima, great nephews Sneferu and Taharqa, as well as her great great nephew Jonathan. Cousins in the Redmond, Winter, Alexander, Williams, George, Cameron, Small and Harding families in Guyana, Canada, United States and Panama will also be mourning her loss.

Born to Ivy and James Redmond (both deceased) on March 16th 1938, in Goed Fortuin Village, Guyana, Elaine was the eldest of 6 siblings. She attended St. Mary’s Anglican School, and later, the Carnegie School of Home Economics. She became a talented seamstress and lover of the culinary arts, and in 1960 emigrated to Canada as a domestic. In her years of residing in Canada, work and study led her to achieve a certificate in bookkeeping from Sir George Williams University (now known as Concordia University), a profession she fondly embraced. However, her first love – dressmaking – was never far from her mind, and her accomplishments include a wedding dress for her sister-in-law Chris and bridesmaid dresses with the help of her sister Janet.

Elaine was a socially conscious individual, volunteering with various organizations over the years. She was a faithful member of St. Genny’s United Church, where she joined the UCW, and she served as President of the Guyana Cultural Association of Montreal for two terms. She was also someone who contributed to the welfare of others within her diverse community. But most of all, she was totally dedicated to her family and close friends. Regardless of the situation, whether called upon or not, she would step up and give her best to the cause at hand.

May her soul rest in peace.

Funeral services will be held on July 29, 2023 at Ste-Geneviève United church, 4697 Boulevard St-Jean in Dollard-Des Ormeaux. Viewing will begin at 9:30am, followed by the service at 10:30am. We will then proceed to Rideau Funeral Home & Cemetery, located at 4239 Boulevard des Sources for burial. A repast will be held at Voluntas Commemoration (adjacent to Ste-Geneviève) afterwards.

The service will be streamed live …

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Elaine’s name to your local Cancer and Alzheimer’s research foundation or Palliative care facility.

The family would like to thank all the medical professionals who provided her with exceptional care – the doctors, nurses, the caregivers who provided home care, and the occupational therapists from the Lakeshore General Hospital, the palliative care clinic, the CLSC and Nova Nurses of West Island.
