ARSENAULT, Rufus
January 21, 1936 - July 14, 2026

On Tuesday July 14, 2026 in his 90th year, Joseph Gerard Rufin (Rufus) Arsenault passed away peacefully following a lengthy battle with dementia. Beloved husband of 68 years to Norma (née Bourque), Rufus leaves behind a lifetime of cherished memories with his loving family. Devoted father to Gerry, Warren, Ron (Cheryl Barron), Ray (Sue Simatos), and Valerie (Adrian Borys). Proud and loving grandfather to Cory (Julia), Nick (Dina), Alex, Kitiara, Ella, and Jeremy, and treasured great-grandfather to Cosima. He will also be deeply missed by many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Born in Adamsville, New Brunswick, on January 21, 1936, to Gerard and Elisabeth (“Lily”) Arsenault, Rufus was the last surviving member of what affectionately became known as The Turtle Club, having been predeceased by his six sisters and two brothers. At the age of 22, Rufus married the love of his life, Norma, while serving with the NATO peacekeeping forces in Germany. A year later, they welcomed their first son, Gerry, beginning a family that became the center of his world. Rufus took great pride in his children, grandchildren, and great-granddaughter, and treasured every opportunity to gather with those he loved. He especially enjoyed visits to Moncton, always looking forward to his favorite meal of fried clams.
Known for his generosity, dependability, and quick wit, Rufus was someone people could always count on. His warmth, storytelling, and good-natured banter had a way of brightening any room and putting those around him at ease.
An entrepreneur at heart, Rufus spent much of his working life building businesses and serving his community. He partnered in a towing and auto repair business before owning and operating several businesses in Valois Village. Deeply involved in the Valois Business Association, he was so dedicated to organizing a local street fair that he famously forgot to purchase his regular Lotto 6/49 ticket, only to see his numbers drawn for a $2.5 million jackpot. Rather than dwell on the missed opportunity, he met the story with the humor and perspective that defined him.
Rufus was also an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion in Pointe-Claire and believed strongly in giving back to his community through service and involvement.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of the Centre d’Hébergement de LaSalle for the compassionate care, kindness, and dignity they provided throughout Rufus’s journey. Special thanks are also extended to Hélène, whose friendship, support, and presence brought comfort to Rufus and his family, especially during times when they could not be by his side.
The celebration of life will be held at a later time. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting you make a donation to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada.

July 18, 2026 at 10:32 pmWhen we moved from Arizona back to Quebec, Uncle Rufus, Aunt Norma, and all the kids warmly welcomed us to stay with them until we could get our own home. When on Christmas Eve one year, my mom and I were stranded when our car broke down and my dad couldn’t get to us, Uncle Rufus left his own Réveillon party to come help us. When I lost my dad, Rufus (forever after Uncle Daddy) was there for me to help fill my dad’s shoes. I have thousands of other memories too numerous to share, suffice as to say that I can think of no one who will be more warmly welcomed into Heaven. I will continue to think of him often and miss him every day. My love to all the family and friends who will also miss him.
