BURGESS, Janet (née Boyle)

It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden and peaceful passing of Janet Boyle Burgess at St. Mary’s Hospital on January 8, 2026, at the age of 86. Beloved wife of the late Thomas William Burgess, she will be forever missed by her daughters Marlene (Serge) and Karen (Mike); her grandchildren Jason (Nittaya), Steven, Christopher, Kayla, and Denver; and her great-grandchildren Araya and Amiya, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. She is predeceased by her parents, Andrew and Mary, and her siblings Elizabeth, Margaret, Edward, Irene, Andrew, Bertha, Winifred, Maisie, and James.

Known lovingly by most as Nanny, she was the heart of her family and a light to everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. With her soft demeanour, ever-present smile, and genuine kindness, Nanny had a way of making people feel seen, welcomed, and deeply loved.

She was a giving soul with a big heart; thoughtful, funny, and endlessly warm. Laughter followed her wherever she went, whether she was telling jokes, playing cards, or sharing a moment with those she loved. She never missed an opportunity to dance, moving through life with joy and grace. She delighted in simple pleasures: trips to the casino, shopping outings, indulging in sweet treats, and time spent enjoying good food in even better company.

Coming from a large family filled with many siblings, nieces, and nephews, Nanny had so much love to give that extended far and wide. Yet her greatest pride and joy was her immediate family; her beloved daughters, her cherished grandchildren, and her precious great-grandchildren. They were the center of her world, and her love for them knew no bounds.

Nanny had a special gift: she made everyone feel like family. She was truly everybody’s Nanny; a source of comfort, laughter, and unconditional love. Her kindness left a mark on all those who crossed her path, and her spirit will live on in the stories remembered, the laughter shared, and the love she so freely gave.

Though she is no longer with us, she will forever live on in our hearts. Her legacy is one of love, warmth, and joy. Nanny is a beautiful reminder of how deeply one life can touch so many others. Her life reminds us to lead with kindness, to find joy in the simple moments, and to love as fully as she did.

A heartfelt thank you and our deepest appreciation to the staff at St. Mary’s Palliative Care Unit who showed warmth and compassion during her final days.
Visitation will take place at Voluntas Funeral Home, 4695 St-Jean, Dollard-des-Ormeaux, QC, H9H 2A7, on Saturday, February 14, 2026 from 11:30 AM to 1:00 p.m. followed by a service in the chapel at 1:00 p.m. A reception will follow at the same location.

In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation in Nanny’s memory would be greatly appreciated.
