December 17, 2017

M. l'abbé Roger Martineau

Roger Martineau was born in the parish of St-Pierre-Apôtre, Montreal, on January 10, 1932, son of Donat Martineau and Rolande Guérard.  He was the eldest of 11 children.  He was educated by Marists Brothers in the local primary school and later in Iberville high school and in 1948 becoming a postulant and novice.  Following his novitiate, he studied three years at the Mariani college in Pougkeepsie, New York, and obtained a Master’s degree in English.  After teaching two years in La Tuque he moved to Rhodesia, Africa, eventually becoming school Principal. In 1977, he returned to Quebec and was admitted to le Grand Séminaire de Montréal.

He was ordained priest by Mgr Grégoire in 1981 and began his ministry at St-Esprit de Rosemont parish and later at St-Sacrament parish in Lachine.

In 1988 he became the long serving pastor of the bilingual parish of St-Luke in Dollard-des-Ormeaux, where he enjoyed his work with the community until 2007 when he became assistant pastor of Jesus Light of the World, serving both St. David and Mary Queen of Peace parishes.  He died peacefully at the Angus retirement home on December 17, 2017 at the age of 85 years and 11 months. He is reunited with his parents, his sister Lise and brother Yvon.

He will be lovingly remembered for his integrity, dedication to his ministry, love of classical music, and his joie de vivre. His pleasant disposition and openness made him very accessible and loved by those knew him.

Fr. Roger Martineau will be deeply missed by his sisters, Sr. Suzanne and Monique (Walter Gilker), his brothers Paul (Ghyslaine Ferland), Pierre (Colette Rioux), Jean (Hélène Fournier), Michel (Louise Pagé), Jacques (Suzanne Emery) and Daniel (Lucie Verreault), his nieces, nephews as well as numerous friends.

Father Roger is with Jesus now. He’s probably hearing the most beautiful music, and with great joy being also welcomed by those friends and family that went to heaven before him. ❤️

Fr. Roger was the Priest who received ,e into the Church on Easter Vigil 2002, and my two daughters received first communion from his hand. He was an excellent Priest, very open and accessible, and one whose homilies were inspirational. I will always remember his passion for Africa, as he would speak about how thee price of a couple of fighter jets could pay to bring up the water from the aquifers beneath the Sahara and turn it into arable farmland to feed millions.
His work and his passions carry on through those he inspired through his ministry.
HE will be missed and fondly remembered by many.

My family and I was saddened by the news of Fr. Roger’s passing who was called home from his earthly journey on December 17, 2017. Fr. Roger left an indelible footprint and impression on the hearts of everyone whom he met on his life’s journey. Fr. Roger was a priest of great compassion, and his spirituality and homilies were inspiring and uplifting. He was certainly one of the best Priests in our time spent at St. Luke’s Parish. He was a free Spirit and he embraced everyone without exception and made you feel so special. He will be greatly missed. May his soul rest in the presence of God’s perfect Peace..

I was just thinking about Father Roger today, as it is my 27th Wedding anniversary. Dear Father officiated at my marriage 27 years ago to this day. When I looked him up I saw that he had transitioned back to Spirit. He was such an amazing human being, that did so much good for the world. He had such an amazing smile that would light up the room and even if you didn’t feel like it, he would make you smile too. Such was his way. Though I am so sad to know that the world has lost this great, humble and beautiful soul, I know that Heaven has rejoiced to receive him back to the fold. God Bless you Father Roger. We will never forget you. <3
