Curtis, Margaret (née Geekie)

Margaret Thomson Geekie Curtis, aged 93, passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 13, 2026. Her parents were Jessie Buchanan of Glasgow and Gilbert Geekie Sr. of Aberdeen, Scottish immigrants who met and married in Ottawa where Margaret was born on May 2, 1932.

Predeceased by Al Curtis, her husband of 55 years, brother Gilbert Geekie and wife Frances, and sister Eleanor and husband James Brennan, Margaret is survived by her sons David (Daniel), Bruce (Corinne) and beloved daughter Janet. Also left to mourn are her grandchildren Eric, Melina and Justin (Kaitlyn), cherished nephew Jim Brennan (Rosa), and many other family members and friends.

Margaret was first and foremost a loving wife and mother, devoted to her family. She was also a dynamic organizer and contributor to neighbourhood life. Her sewing skills and talent for crafts earned much praise from all who benefitted from her innate flair for design and eye for detail. Supporting the special needs community was a vital passion for Margaret: for several years she provided computer typesetting expertise for the WIAIH (West Island Association for the Intellectually Handicapped) newsletter, and was president or co-president of the Progressive Bowling League. She was a warm, welcoming and generous host who will be particularly remembered for sheltering and feeding neighbours during the ice storm of January 1998.

The family will receive condolences at Voluntas Commémoration, 4695 St-Jean, Dollard-des-Ormeaux, QC H9H 2A7 on Saturday, June 13, beginning at 1:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held next door at Ste-Geneviève United Church, at 2 p.m. Following the service, family and friends are invited to the Voluntas reception room where the Celebration of Life will continue until 5 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to WIAIH, an organization close to the family’s heart, or to another charity of choice.
