Gehlsen, Marianne Ruth Beate (Brandt)

Marianne was a true force of nature—elegant, intelligent, and endlessly engaging. Confident and capable, she brought vitality and grace to every chapter of her long and remarkable life, and those who knew her were fortunate to share in it.

Our beloved mother passed away peacefully on January 12, 2026, in her 101st year, surrounded by family. Throughout her life, Marianne met change and challenge with resilience, curiosity, and courage, continually growing and embracing each new chapter with enthusiasm.

Born in Breslau, Germany, in 1924, Marianne spent her formative years in England, where she trained as a nurse at the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford and worked with the Red Cross. These early experiences fostered the strength, compassion, and independence that would define her life. As a young woman, she endured profound loss, meeting it with quiet resolve. In a whirlwind four days, she fell in love with a Grenadier Guard, John Cunningham, a love that led her to immigrate to Canada at the age of 19. Reunited in Canada, they married and settled in Montreal, where John built a career as an executive with Canadian National Railway and together, they raised their children, Michael, Bob, and Kathy. John tragically predeceased her in 2000.

Marianne later married Grant Gehlsen Sr., in 1977 with whom she shared a rich and fulfilling life in Montreal while also wintering in Siesta Key, Florida. Together they were active and devoted members to the Order of St. Lazarus.

A distinguished real estate professional on Montreal’s West Island, Marianne was admired for her integrity, professionalism, and genuine warmth. Many clients became lifelong friends. She was generous with her time and resources, supporting animal welfare and organizations assisting those in need—reflecting her deep commitment to kindness and service.

A woman of style and substance, Marianne carried herself with dignity and an infectious zest for life. She loved golf and entertaining and took great joy in bringing people together. She was an active member of St. Andrew’s and St. Paul’s Churches in Montreal.

Marianne will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her children Michael Cunningham (wife- Susanne) and Bob Cunningham; her granddaughter Christie Scrase (husband – Dylan); her great-grandchildren Ella and Chloe; her stepdaughter Elizabeth Locke (husband – Jeff); her grandson Christopher, granddaughter Jessie Campbell (husband – Dean); and her great-grandchildren Eowyn and Henry. She will also be fondly remembered by extended family members Chantal Gauthier and Sandy Chapman and by the many friends and colleagues whose lives she touched.

Marianne leaves behind a legacy of warmth, generosity, resilience, and meaningful contribution—a true centenarian in every sense. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in her honour to animal welfare organizations or women’s shelters would be gratefully appreciated.

The family wants to thank the doctors and staff of Lakeshore General Hospital for their professionalism and kindness.

A gathering to celebrate her life will take place at Fritz Community Center, 20477 Lakeshore, Baie-D’Urfé, on Monday, August 17, 2026 from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. A reception with eulogies will be held at the same location as of 12 noon.
