Belgrade, October 8, 1950 – Montreal, February 20, 2026

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ivan, after a brief illness, on February 20 at the Jewish General Hospital, at peace, on his own terms, surrounded by his wife and children.

He leaves to mourn his beloved wife of 40 years, Diane Lague, and children Alison Petrovich (Borys Morgach), and Sean Petrovich.

Ivan was born in Belgrade, Yugoslavia and emigrated to Canada via Salzburg, Austria in 1959. He was raised by his loving mother Magdalena Jankovic and stepfather Karel Konetopsky.

He also leaves his cherished sister Maryanne Petrovich (Onofrio Santamaria), as well as his in-laws Danny Lague (the late Susan), Mike Lague (Sherri Newman), Mark Lague (Lori Morris), Tammy Lague (Tracie McGee), and Wendy Lague (Tom Fahey).

He was ‘bad uncle’ to Jean (Jason), Phillip, Charles (Shannon), Ryan (Raya), Adam (Alyssa), Ethan (Cassandra), Quinn (Samantha), Stefi (Jake), Trevor (Emma), Bennett (Sophie), and Colin.

His formative years were spent in the colourful and diverse neighbourhood of Mile-End, Montreal where he forged many lifelong friendships. Ivan was filled with gratitude for the life he led. A graduate of Concordia University in English and Film, he was passionate about art, music, books, sports, film, and spirituality. He had a long and successful career in freight forwarding, which gave him the opportunity to travel to many corners of the world. His greatest joy was travelling with his family to Europe, Cape Cod, and beyond, with the highlight being a trip to India and Nepal.

Ivan was one-of-a-kind. He was generous, curious, compassionate and continued to make people laugh until his final days. He was a gourmand and wine connoisseur and loved to share meals with family and friends. His spirit will live on in Alison and Sean, of whom he was an extremely proud Papa.

Friends and family are invited to a memorial gathering in Ivan’s honour on March 8 from 2:00 – 4:30 p.m., at Voluntas Commémoration, 4695, boul. St-Jean, Dollard-des-Ormeaux Qc H9H 2A7. Tributes will take place at 2:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to The Old Brewery Mission.
