It is with great sadness, we announce the passing of Astley Samuel South, devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and lifelong educator, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2026, at the age of 98.

Born on April 17, 1927, in Christiana, Jamaica, he was the fifth of fifteen children of Hubert and Ada South. From humble beginnings, he became a man known for discipline, intelligence, and quiet strength.

Astley began his teaching career early in life, working in the Cayman Islands, as well as at Munro College and Mico Training College in Jamaica. In 1957, he immigrated to Canada, settled in Montreal, and completed his degree at McGill University before pursuing a Master of Education and a career in teaching.

In 1961, he married Joyce, and together they raised three sons: Brian, Graham, and Evan. He valued education, structure, and perseverance, and instilled these principles in his family.

He is lovingly remembered by his sons Brian (Dilorece), Graham (Lisa), and Evan; grandchildren Imani (Sheldon) and Kareem; great-grandchild Kyrie; siblings Enid, Mavis, Jean, Raymond, and Rose; and his many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Joyce.

Astley will be remembered for his warm humor, storytelling, faith, and steady presence. His wisdom, resilience, and love for his family remain his enduring legacy.
